THE dominance of Japanese staying horses was again evidenced last weekend when local superstar Deep Impact romped away with the Japan Cup in Tokyo leaving bookmaker Michael Eskander on the wrong side of the ledger with punters.
Operations spokesman Michael Horne said it had been their intention to lay the favorite Deep Impact. “We bet odds of $1.70 and punters kept on taking the quote and he started at $1.65 with us.
“ But the result was never in doubt and it was a bad result for us. It took the shine off what we won when Marasco was beaten in Perth last Saturday,” Horne said.
Marasco, described as an aspiring weight-for-age galloper from the Fred Kersley stable, was attempting to qualify for a gain a start in this week’s Railway Stakes at Ascot and was sent out a hot favorite in the Peters Stakes.
But from an inside barrier, the gelding was denied any galloping room in the final 600 metres and finished ninth, but just over three lengths from the winner Always A Devil.
Marasco had been heavily supported in Railway Stakes early betting and had firmed from $4.2 to $4 favoritism. But it now looks likely the galloper will be given a let-up and prepared for the Australian Cup in the autumn, which next year will be staged at Caulfield as Flemington’s track is under reconstruction.
